Work continues on Pong today, there was great progress made yesterday with many having the basic features already up and running. The next step is to add lives and a restart. You must also try to add levels e.g. after 10 taps on paddle add extra speed to the ball.

Just a reminder to wear sunscreen to school this week. UV rays are very high at the moment.

Tuesday 30th of May

Work continues on your chairs and the podcast today.

We heard the word innovate/innovator a lot yesterday. One of the lessons where this word popped up was about Dick Fosbury. What can you remember from the lesson and what is the current world record?

Today is the final day of your current Scratch project. Our next project is called Pong. Some of you may even want to begin the Pong project today.

It has been great to see how many of you break down your project into a number of smaller steps. It is also great to see your questions becoming more specific which is showing a deeper understanding of the problem.

This week in history we will look at the Gaelic Revival.

The Gaelic revival  was the late-nineteenth-century national revival of interest in the Irish language. Culture (including folklore, mythology, sports, music, arts, etc.). Irish had diminished as a spoken tongue, remaining the main daily language only in isolated rural areas, with English having become the dominant language in the majority of Ireland.

Our Movement game in PE today is Keeper of the Castle.

We will be building Hydraulic Machines next week but time will be put aside on Thursday this week to drill and prepare lollipop sticks.

A big thanks to everyone who helped out with hurling last week. It will continue right up to June. 5th class are hurling today. Beans are updated. We will watch Deacon Gerry’s new video today also.

News Story of the Day

Friday 21st of April

Some of our Neurographic Art from yesterday. We wrote a upcoming challenge or something that causes us stres or anxiety on the back of a the page. Then starting at the edge of the page and finishing at the edge of the page, you drew a continuous line for 3 seconds. You then rounded all the angles and coloured in.

Cake Sale today, you will be serving Ms. Murphy’s class (5th) and Ms. Kenny’s.

Friday tests and homework correction today, try to remember your books.

We learned about the Polders of the Netherlands yesterday. What do you recall?

Tá taispeantas nua ar TG4 ‘Saol Ella’. Tá sé faoin ochtar sa Ghaeltacht. Féachfaimid ar an gcéad chlár inniu.

Puzzles of the Day

Do you agree?

Thursday 20th of April

A lot of your conversations in English is simply questions and answers, the same applies to Irish. We will focus on verbs only for the next week and as I said there will be a new feature on the app soon to help you with this also.

In Geography today we will look at the Polders and complete a SketchNote on it.

Although it is not our PE day but while the weather is good we will slip outside for 20 minutes today. We will play a game called ‘Freedom Catch’.

I hope Maths revision is going well at home. There is only a day or 2 left to revise all questions. Please use the time in class to ask for help on questions you don’t understand.

We will be doing Neurographic Art this week also.

There are only two rules for Neurographic lines: 1. They are conscious in thought and do not follow a repeated pattern/design . 2. They should begin and end on an edge of the paper.

Puzzle of the Day

Wednesday 19th of April

Well done to everyone at the FAI soccer schools in Arklow yesterday. It was nice to hear positive answers to the 1st two questions we asked them – Did you enjoy yourselves? Did you give it your best?

Thanks again to everyone who helped out with the hurling at lunchtimes yesterday. We will leave the hurleys and helmets at the windmill today and 4th class will take them from there.

New jobs for April/May were handed out yesterday. The final bankers of the year are KatyMay & Chloe, Méabh is on devices, Liam is our Carbon Monitor, Cillian, Alex, Kiki and Emily are in charge of hurling and I am also looking for 2 people to look after the Chromebooks. You must bring the Chromebooks to a different classroom every morning and bring them back to the storage room in the evening.

We read about Martin Luther King yesterday and his fight for equal rights in the USA. We will start and complete the written activity today on it. At around the same time there was a civil rights movement in Northern Ireland. This led the the conflict known as The Troubles that lasted from the 1960’s to 1998.

The flower bed we weeded yesterday is starting to look well. Unfortunately our time was cut short yesterday and we still have to dig up the earth. The plants are coming next week so we will try put 20 minutes aside today to complete it.

We will be entering this competition. We will complete entries in class.

Tuesday 18th of April

It was a fantastic 1st day hurling today. 5th class will begin at lunchtime tomorrow. For now 6th class will play on Friday at lunchtimes. Feel free to drop in and play anytime. It is hoped that some of the lunchtime participants will join up and play with the local club Western Gaels.

I think the Yew tree really grabbed the attention of many yesterday. We learned that the study of archery is called toxophilite, can you remember why? We learned about the Battle of Agincourt during the 100 years war between England and France. What famous insult originated from then. We had only 5 minutes today to complete your sketch note. Here are some examples.

Between 9:30 and 10 today author Siofra O’Donovan will be coming into our classroom to talk about her work and her novels. What would you like to ask her.

Seeing that we are are down 10 students today due to the FAI soccer, we are now going to weed the butterfly flower bed at 12 today instead.

Puzzle of the Day

Monday 17th of April

Welcome backend I hope everyone had a nice break.

It is your final term in 6th class, just short of 50 days left before heading to secondary school and between the Confirmation retreat, school tours, Confirmation, sports days etc we will have about 40 days in the classroom which means we can still cover quite a bit of content or if you are struggling in a particular subject there is more than enough time to make huge improvements.

We will start Great Goal this morning and we will open the application before Maths this morning (Please remind me each day). There is also a new feature coming on the app later this week which will test Irish verbs and tenses.

Anyone who has gardening gloves, you can bring them in on Wednesday as we will be weeding and preparing a flower bed.

Our project this month is hydraulic cranes. Hurling is starting this week and it will be held at lunchtime. 5th class will be on Tuesday, 4th on Wednesday, 3rd on Thursday and 6th on Friday. Boys and girls will train together for the 1st week or two. Once we have an idea of numbers we can split it up.

In History today we will learn about the Yew tree.

News Story of the Day

Thursday 30th of March

Deacon Gerry was in yesterday to inform us that all confirmation candidates must attend a ceremony on Monday the 3rd of April at 7:30 in the church. Assemble is at 9:30 this morning. After we have a number of activities to concentrate on – Vox Pop , Art and Team Building games.

Wednesday 29th of March

We finally got to run our water powered cars yesterday. There was some glimpses of success but they really didn’t run as well as I thought they would. Possibly placing the bottle at a greater height would have helped or using extra light materials.

We will continue reading about Aviation today. Cillian mentioned that a relative of his used to travel on this plane regularly. Do you know what it’s called?

Concorde was a supersonic airliner, meaning that it could fly faster than the speed of sound. Built by Britain and France, Concorde was in service from 1976 to 2003. It was the fastest airliner ever. It could only carry 130 passengers. It was only allowed to travel over seas or uninhabited areas due to its supersonic boom.

Beginning after Easter we will be getting a 1 1/2 slot every week for the Chromebooks. Any persuasive writing for me?

Art later today also.

Puzzle of the Day

Tuesday 28th of March

The weather looks good in the afternoon and hopefully we get to race the water powered cars then.

You will receive more time again today for persuasive writing and they will be completed for homework this week. Alex, Jack and Tara handed up their work on Friday. I hope to have 25 published on the site by Friday morning. No other homework this week 🙂

We will read and discuss ‘The Great Famine’ of 1850 today. Although we have touched on the subject already this year, what do you remember about it?

End of year Maths Test 2 will take place at 11:50 today once the Literacy group returns. Again don’t worry about how you do, we are using this test to see where we need to look back on. We will take this test again after Easter.

Puzzle of the Day

Friday 24th of March

Odd Sock Day today in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. Well done in the Maths test yesterday, it was fantastic to see many work out each question and we will take part 2 next week.

The clocks go forward this weekend. Why does this happen every March?

The first of the persuasive writing pieces have been published. I’m hoping to get many more complete today.

We have made a start to our VoxPop podcast. Topics being discussed are Dogs v Cats, Homework, Football or GAA, Robots v Teachers, Soiderman v Batman, Sweets at the Till, Smartphones and School.

Puzzle of the Day

Thursday 23rd of March

Small change of plan to the Maths test. We will now take it at 11:50 after the Literacy group returns. There is not enough time in the morning before the Maths group leaves. Do not worry if you haven’t covered all questions in preparation for the test. We will be taking this test again at the end of April and it is good to see where we need to wok on.

Easter hat competition (recycled materials) takes place next Wednesday. There can only be one entry from the class. Have we volunteers?

Well done to everyone who completed Easter reports for next weeks assembly and Easter newsletter. It is great to get them all completed. Is there anything you want to change in them before I send to Fiona.

School Council Report for Assembly (Liam + Anna)

Mr. Forde’s class have been doing lots of activities since Christmas. They started off by building a Marble Run which was great fun for the class. They also built water pumps which successfully dispensed water from one container to another. They also built and raced water powered cars made up of recycled materials.

For Friendship week, they took part in all the activities and we also had to plan, design and present a ‘Wellbeing App’. Each group of 3 presented, Anna, Lucy & Lillian won and their app was called ‘Great Goal’. You log into it once a day and it gives you a fun challenge to pass. Last but not least, they spent had to compose a piece of music using percussion instruments in February, they loved coming up with the piece and performing in front of the class.

Seanfhocal for Easter Newsletter (Kiki & KatyMay)

During Seachtain na Gaeilge we learned a lot about seanfhocals. Here are some examples

  • Is fearr an tsláinte ná na tánite – Your health is your wealth
  • Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin – There’s no Hearth like your own Hearth
  • Ní neart go cur le chéile – There is strength in unity
  • Ní dhéanfadh an saol capall rása d’asal – You can’t make a racehorse out of a donkey
  • Ní bhíonn saoi gan locht – There is no wise man without fault
  • Tús maith leath na hoibre – A good start is half the work

Our personal favourite is – Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin.

Wellbeing App for Easter Newsletter (Great Goal by Anna, Lucy & Lillian)

Our class had to design a Wellbeing app during Friendship Week. Wellbeing is anything that makes you feel comfortable, healthy or happy. The class was divided into groups of 3, they discussed what they wanted to do and then went about designing the wireframe (drawing the layout of the app on paper). Once the wireframe was completed we had to discuss colours to be used on the app, the app name and the app logo. Each group presented and our app called ‘Great Goal’ won. Some of the other apps were called ‘’Happy Holidays’, ‘1 a Day’, ‘WhaddaDo’ and ‘Circle of Friends’. Our app allows you to log in once a day and it gives you a fun challenge to complete, you sometimes receive a reward for completing the challenge. Here are some pictures of it.

Puzzle of the Day

Wednesday 22nd of March

Just a reminder that you don’t need to complete Monday on Master your Maths and pick one question to take off from F & F and Spellbound.

I think the story of the cuckoo was quite shocking for many of you yesterday. Nature can be so cruel.

It led us to the discussion on bird migration. For many years people did not know where birds went each Winter. Some of Irelands birds travel North and some South. Eimantas told us that years ago, larger birds had come back to the UK and Ireland with arrows in them which led them to think they had travelled to a far off land. It wasn’t until bird tagging started in 1902 that we found out exactly where they went.

Key Words and Phrases from our work on the Cuckoo.

Meadow Pipit (Banaltra na Cuacha)

Reed Warbler (UK)

Finbarr Healy – Wexford (Is he telling the truth)

Africa – Migration over Sahara

in Ireland from April – August

2 weeks from hatching to full size

Cuckoo sounds like wood pigeon and Collared Dove

April 3rd record official first sighing in Ireland

Mother Cuckoo can watch 20 nests at a time and sneaks in her egg when nest is empty

Cuckoo chick pushes eggs or other chicks out of the nest so they get all the food

Ready to leave the nest after 2 months

Egg hatching times to perfection so that they hatch before other eggs.

We have some litmus paper in the class. We will test a few items and especially the lake water from Blessington Lakes.

Scientists Say: pH

Persuasive writing will resume again today, I’m hoping to read most 1st drafts. Weather permitting, today is the last day of water powered cars. You will receive 20 minutes to do final repairs and we will go out and race them after lunch.

You will continue practicing tomorrow Maths test this morning. It is very important that you understand the answer to each question and not just remember the answers.

Puzzle of the Day

Brain teaser - Number And Math Puzzle - fruit brain teaser - This fun fruit brain teasers requires logical thinking. Can you find the numbers for different kind of fruit? There is an apple, banana and plum.

Tuesday 21st of March

Lillian and Daniela have designed a fantastic logo for the ‘Great Goal’ wellbeing app. Once the got;s are handed in the app will be updated. Lillian, Daniela & Lucy will go through the app today and discuss what changes they want done to it.

It is just 8 1/2 days to the Easter holidays and we have a lot to cover in that time. Persuasive writing will be published on the site, an afternoon will be put aside to test and race water powered cars. We will also work on and hopefully complete the March podcast ‘Vox Pops’. End of Year Maths Test 1 and 2 will be taken also. I have also offered on behalf of the class to weed a flower bed and prepare for flowers this Spring.

We never got to the cuckoo last week. The cuckoo is generally only heard here first in April but on Mooney goes Wild last week Wexford man Finbarr Healy claimed he heard one in February. Was he lying, did he mishear or was he actually telling the truth. It would be really unusual to hear a cuckoo this early in the year. We will listen to the clip and there is also a brainbuilder on the cuckoo.

Once I get the final novel back we will begin Paired Reading. Each group will have a questions sheet along side them as they side. Groups will ask questions of each other before, during and after reading.

Puzzle of the Day

How can 8 + 8 = 4?

Thursday 16th of March

The school is publishing an Easter news. We have been asked to write an article about the ‘WellBeing App’ and ‘Seanfhocal Gaeilge Posters’. Anyone wishing to volunteer to write these.

The Talent Show begins at 10:15 today, it will stop for break and resume after.

Wednesday 15th of March

Well done yesterday with your projects. There is another hours work left to get them all completed. Today is forecast wet but we will bring them out side tomorrow to test them.

3D Objects Maths test this morning. Storytelling and Poem recital at 9:45. Irish Dancing performance at 12:30 and FlashMob in the afternoon. There will also be a Tráth na gCeist at 11:30. Student Council to Ms Shewards room at 9:30 to prepare the day.

Puzzle of the Day

If you have a 7-minute hourglass and an 11-minute hourglass, how can you boil an egg in exactly 15 minutes?

Tuesday 14th of March

It was fantastic to have the 4 musicians and singers in yesterday as part of our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebration.

It’s project day today, you will work in groups of 4. There are a number of different parts to the project so groups of 4 will divide in 2 and then combine their parts when complete.

Beidh céilí ar siúl amárach sa halla. Beimid ag damhsa idir leathuair a deich agus a haon déag le rang Ms. Nugent.

Final Day to hand up water projects. the Green Schools committee members will then select the winning posters.

Puzzle of the Day

You’re escaping a maze, and there are three doors in front of you. The door on the left leads to a pit of lava. The door in the center leads to a room filled with deadly gas. The door on the right leads to a lion that hasn’t eaten in three months. Which door do you choose?

Monday 13th of March

I hope you all had a nice weekend. Between Glasnevin, soccer and snow we didn’t cover a lot of academic work but that’s ok too. There is no written homework this week, we will put a line through Week 22 on Fuaimeanna & Focal, Master your Maths and Spellbound, however learning work continues and there will be tests on Thursday. Water Projects will be collected this morning also. We have just one Chapter Maths test left (3D Objects). Next week we begin revision tests.

On Tuesday we will put books aside to attempt this project. I have never done it with a class before. It is an extremely difficult assignment but I think we will give it a really good go.

https://youtube.com/shorts/a0HvLS5eSDM?feature=share

The ‘Great Goal’ app is waiting on pictures and information? I’m hoping to have it completed before Easter. There will be live music at 12 today followed by storytelling and Poem recitals. Eimantas, Donagh, Chloe and Liam will be performing.

Paired Reading begins as soon as we get the final novel ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ is returned. You are paired with partner and will ask questions before, during and after reading.

I need 2 volunteers today to do a survey in all classes. We have hurls and helmets coming to the school but we need to find out how many in each class are interested in playing.
