The grey squirrel carry a virus that affects the red squirrel and they eat acorns before they are ripe. The red squirrel may become extinct in parts of Ireland and the world because of the Grey Squirrel.
The Pine Martin does a good job of keeping grey squirrel numbers down though. Red squirrels don’t get caught as often by a Pine Martin.
The grey squirrel came to Ireland as a wedding present in 1911. They were 6 pairs of them. They ran off into the woods in Co. Longford. They have taken over from the red squirrel in many parts of Ireland, however you will not find a grey squirrel in Clare, Galway, Roscommon or Mayo. Why?
