Aborigines are thought to be the oldest race of people in the world. They have lived in Australia for at least 40,000 years. Aborigine comes from the Latin word which means in the beginning.
It is believed they originally lived in Asian countries and first entered Australia using land bridges. Since then the water levels have risen. As a result most of the evidence of their existence is now lost underwater.
Rabbit Proof Fence Australia
Rabbits were introduced to Australia by the First Fleet in 1788, but they became a problem after October 1859, when Thomas Austin released 24 wild rabbits from England for hunting purposes, believing “The introduction of a few rabbits could do little harm and might provide a touch of home, in addition to a spot of hunting.”
The rabbits proved to be extremely prolific and spread rapidly across the southern parts of the country. Australia had ideal conditions for an explosion in the rabbit population, including the fact that they had virtually no local predators.
By 1887, losses from rabbit damage compelled the New South Wales Government to offer a £25,000 reward (equivalent to $1,900,000 in 2018) for “any method of success not previously known in the Colony for the effectual extermination of rabbits”.
The State Barrier Fence of Western Australia, formerly known as the Rabbit Proof Fence, the State Vermin Fence, and the Emu Fence, is a pest-exclusion fence constructed between 1901 and 1907 to keep rabbits and other agricultural pests, from the east, out of Western Australian pastoral areas.
Cathy Freeman
Freeman was the home favourite for the 400 m title at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Freeman won the Olympic title in a time of 49.11 seconds, becoming only the second Australian Aboriginal Olympic champion. After the race, Freeman took a victory lap, carrying both the Aboriginal and Australian flags. This was despite unofficial flags being banned at the Olympic Games, and the Aboriginal flag, while recognised as official in Australia, not being a national flag or recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
